2 Day Fly Fishing School
Join our 2 day fly fishing for beginners’ classes in either Denver or Vail, any weekend from April through November. No previous experience is needed, and, if necessary, Minturn Anglers will provide all the gear needed for the class.
Classroom instruction on Saturday covers all the basics, from equipment, reading water, fish habits and habitat and choosing flies, to learning essential knots and rigging. Sunday is spent on the water, building on this knowledge and learning how to present flies, mending, high stick nymphing and landing and safe release of fish. This course offers an ideal mix of practical and hands-on instruction.
Learn Fly Fishing with a Guide
One on one instruction is a good way to learn how to fly fish. It is hard to beat individual coaching from someone who really knows tackle, techniques, flies and the water. Minturn Anglers in both Denver and Vail offer both private and group lessons.
One option is to spend some time in the classroom learning basics such as fish identification and habitat, gear, fly selection and knots, reading the water and casting and presentation. Then your guide will take you to the best fishing spot of the day, where he can assist you in perfecting your casting skills, and catching and landing your first fish.
Two Day Rowing School
Improve your rowing skills by completing the two day rowing school in Vail. Whether you are just beginning your rowing experience, brushing up on your skills, or are an experienced rower looking for extra tips, this course is right for you. Two days of non-stop instruction covers all aspects of boating safety and equipment, rowing basics as well as coaching up to Class 3 Whitewater, rowing technique, river etiquette and more.
Single Hand Casting Class
Perfect your casting technique by enrolling in our single hand casting class. At both our Denver and Vail shops, we use video technology to analyze your cast, frame by frame, to eliminate wasted and incorrect movements and improving your overall technique. If you want to learn basic fly casting, shooting line and basic or more advanced roll casting, or double haul and switch casts, this is the class for you.
Spey Casting Class
Learn to use a two handed fly rod to cover a lot of water at any depth, both downstream and upstream. Our Denver spey casting classes are held on the South Platte and the Colorado River. Receive professional coaching in choosing the right gear, and proper techniques for two handed casts such as single speys, perry pokes, double speys, snake rolls and snap-ts.
Fly Tying Class
Expand your enjoyment of the sport by enrolling in a fly tying class at the Denver Minturn Anglers fly shop. We are the unchallenged experts, with our own collection of fly tying videos. We adapt our four hour one-on-one instruction to meet your specific needs, based on what you would like to tie or improve upon. We include all equipment needed, and offer discounts on materials used.
Tying classes are scheduled throughout the year at all of our locations. Check our newsletters or subscribe to our newsletters (in the sidebar of our pages) to plan for a fly tying class. We also have guest tyers from various locations present their tying techniques and share their knowledge with their audience.
Minturn Anglers offers two five-day guiding courses, twice during May, from the Vail location. These are extremely detailed courses, designed to teach the technical aspects of fly fishing, and coach students in becoming professional fly fishing guides, perhaps with Minturn Anglers or elsewhere. Learn everything a great guide needs to excel from our Senior Guides and shop staff who have decades of experience.
Start with the Wade Guide School. The curriculum includes client safety, customer service, rigging, etiquette, teaching models and approaches to client interaction, photography, entomology and much more.
Having mastered the skills needed of a wade fly fishing guide, graduate to the Float Guide School. Five days of intensive instruction and oar time allows students to meet minimum Colorado state requirements to become a float guide. Every safety aspect is covered, as is etiquette with clients and other guides, on the water, at the boat ramp and in the fly shop. Call our shop for curriculum detail and requirements.
