The waters that surround our shop in Minturn are arguably the best fly fishing in the state of Colorado. Here are some of our favorite Rocky Mountain rivers that guide, fish or both on year-round. Each river has its own unique character, and if you asked ten people in the Vail Valley where they like to fly fish the most, you would probably get ten different answers. Please use this page to help you pick the right river for you to fly fish on your own or with an experienced guide. Regardless, every one of these  rivers is a gem of its own and we at Minturn Anglers cherish them all!

Eagle River Vail Denver CO - eagle river fishing report

The Eagle river is a gem that starts as a meandering creek near historic Camp Hale and flows north and west 60 miles until it joins with the Colorado River at Dotsero, below the town of Gypsum. In between lies the most underrated and overlooked freestone fishery in the entire state of Colorado. Wild Brown trout and Rainbows are behind every rock. For those looking to fish Colorado, this …

The Roaring Fork or “Thunder River” as the local Indians called her, drops more in elevation in its 70 mile descent than the Mississippi River does in 2500 miles! This fishery is known all over the world for its crystal clear waters filled with wild Rainbow and Brown trout. Starting near Aspen and dropping quickly to its headwaters with the mighty Colorado in Glenwood Springs, the “Fork” is a trout fisherman’s mecca.

Homestake Creek is one of the main sources for the Eagle River. Homestake is our closest tailwater but other than consistent flows you would never know it from the fishing- Homie fishes more like the typical Colorado high altitude creek. Just like Cross Creek, Homestake Creek does not have prolific hatches but instead a smattering of bugs can almost always be observed on the water.

The lower section of Gore Creek is classified as a Gold Medal fishery by Colorado Parks and Wildlife which means that it is of the highest standard for large wild fish in the state. She has, unfortunately, experienced some decline of late, and the bug life has been suspected as the culprit. Efforts are underway to address these concerns, with some noticeable success.  Experienced anglers can still find trout hiding in plain sight and with long, fine leaders and light tippet, still bring a fish or two to hand.

The Blue River is a tailwater stream in Silverthorne that is fed by Dillon Reservoir and continues until it meets the Colorado River at Kremmling. Brush Creek is another alpine gem starting in the lofty New York and Hardscrabble mountains and meeting the Eagle River in the town of Eagle. Cross creek offers fantastic scenery and great small stream fishing. Cross Creek is home to Brook trout, Cutthroat trout and Brown trout down. The Brown trout tend to congregate near the confluence of the Eagle River but small numbers can be found throughout. For most of the year you can do very well with a dry-dropper rig and a bit of stealth. Using a light indicator rig is also very product …

The Frying Pan River is home to cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and cut-bows; a hybrid of the two fish. The brown trout fishing can also be fantastic in the right places. …
