RIVER REPORT

Arkansas River

The Arkansas River begins in the Sawatch Vail Valley Range and runs for more than 300 miles before crossing into Kansas. Our 2.5 mile stretch of water on the Rolling J Ranch sits in the shadows of the states highest peaks, Mount Ebert and Mount Massive (both over 14,000 ft).

Great year-round hatches, hungry and aggressive tout in a spectacular high mountain setting is the quintessential Colorado fly fishing experience.

RECOMMENDED FLIES

  • Amy’s ant #10

  • Pat’s rubber leg #8

  • GTI Caddis #14

  • PMD emerger #18

  • Olive Pheasant Tail #16

Report Date: August 3rd, 2017

With the flows dropping on the Ark, the fish have been moving off the bank into the runs and riffles. Fish have been opportunistically feeding on larger stones, yellow sallies, and caddis imitations. The upper stretch has been fishing the best for the wade angler. Recent rainstorms have the lower portions much higher which has made it difficult to wade fish. The lower stretches have been a hit or miss with the recent rain storms blowing out the river.

Don’t be afraid to throw your larger terrestrial dries on the banks as the hoppers are beginning to become more prevalent. Large stimulators, Amy’s ants with darker stones trailing. Right now, Leadville and above is where to be at the moment. The lower stretch has been mostly off color.
