Cross Creek

Cross Creek provides a great small stream fishing experience in a spectacular outdoor environment. Home to brook, brown and rainbow trout, numbers can be put up with a dry dropper rig and a stealthy approach. One of the prettiest places in the valley.

Cross Creek Colorado

Report Date: August 3rd, 2017

Cross Creek is still fishing strong as the air temps drop and the flows decrease. Longer leaders are necessary as well as lighter tippet. Dry flies with droppers are still catching fish though smaller sizes are the way to go. Caddis, terrestrials and small mayfly imitations will catch them.

You don’t have to match the hatch as much as you need a good drift and presentation. For an hour or two of fun, park at the Malloit Park trailhead and hit the water closest to the Vail Ski Academy. If you have a day to spend outside, access Cross Creek via Tigijuan Road and hike into the upper meadow.

Best dries are Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams and Corn-Fed Caddis in a 16-20. The best droppers are Rainbow Warriors, Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails and JuJu Baetis.
