Vail Valley Fishing Reports

Eagle River

ABSOLUTELY STELLAR. There’s just no better way to put it. The BWO’s are in full force as well as our favorite, “Midgezilla”, a size 16-18 midge common to late winter months. P.R.O. (Pre Run Off) has just begun so the rainbows, cuts and cutbows are feeling the natural urge. Flows are creeping up so fish know they need to feast in preparation for run-off. Guided trips with Minturn Anglers have been absolutely stellar. Get your butt to Minturn and fish!Gore Creek
Get on the Gore before the flows jump too much. The fishing before run-off is typically remarkable but with the Eagle River, big brother, fishing so well, this little gem is seeing a lot less pressure. If creekin’ is your jam, there’s no better time then now to fish Gore Creek.
Colorado River and Roaring Fork
The Colorado River is up and down right now with mixed reports. Inconsistent flows, low visibility and wild weather has the fish confused. Unless you’re gung-ho to get behind the sticks, wade the Roaring Fork, Eagle or Colorado. If it’s the Colorado or nuthin’, bring your Pat’s Rubber Legs and small beatis patterns for best results.
Speaking of Roaring Fork, the Fork is fishing great with BWO’s coming off daily. Streamers will get you a treat every now and again but following an indicator is your best bet on this techy stream.

Deckers

Deckers is….. Deckers. One day you’re a hero, the next you’re left scratchin’ your head! Don’t be put off though, even on the weekends. Consistent flies include RS-2’s, Barr’s BWO Emerger, Chocolate Thunders and Flossy Worms. Fish those underneath a Pats Rubber Legs and hold on! Think outside the box and head a little further downstream then your used to. Get outside the comfort zone and fish new sections. The results are typically worth it!

It has begun… kinda. Fish are moving in but the stubborn management hasn’t budged the flows. The rain/snow this past week helped push a few fish with more trickling in daily. At this rate, it’s worth going down for your 20+ inch fish but the behemoths are far and few between. For best results, fish it at night with streamers!
Arkansas River
The Arkansas River continues to impress from Colorado Springs to Salida. BWO’s are on the menu further south with fish keying on the Golden Stoneflies upstream. A Pats Rubber Legs will work anywhere on the stream but vary your trailing flies. Midges and Olives in the Springs, Caddis and Small Mayflies into Salida.

Urban South Platte

The carp are beginning to spread out so before you go running to your honey holes, check the thin water below it. Groups and Singles are cruising and the sight fishing has been getting better week by week. Large nymphs, Headstands, Aggrovators and worms have been the ticket of late.
