Eagle River
Lower water or not, the Eagle River continues to fish well. As the flows have thinned to about 200 CFS, the bugs have gotten smaller and the water temps have risen. Plan on fishing the morning or afternoon with itty-bitty bugs. Most fish are being caught on flies in the 20-22 range. Bigger flies (Golden Stoneflies to be exact) are being fished in the lower river. Best sections are Avon down to Gypsum. Flies include Quasimodo Pheasant Tails, JuJu Baetis, Green Midges and Biot Stoneflies.
Gore Creek
Gore Creek is a big or small game right now. Small nymph rigs or big hopper rigs. The water is skinny and gin clear but they love the sight of a big bug slappin’ on the water. The bigger fish are loving the big bugs but plan on covering water when you’re fishing the hoppers. Otherwise, if your presentation is light, sit on some holes with your sz. 22-24 nymphs, larvae and pupae
Colorado River
Calling all early risers and night owls – the fishing is killer for those that’ll be the first one on the water or the last one to leave. The middle of the day is for scenery mostly – animals and the “bikini hatch”. Think small PMDs and emergers trailed behind the famous Pats Rubber Legs or any other big stonefly nymph imitation. The water is lower this time of year so if you are going on your own, bring the raft. If you are looking to float and don’t have a boat, hire a guide from Minturn Anglers for optimal fishing results!

Deckers
430 CFS and going down (but don’t tell the rain that). It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally dry fly time at Deckers and the fish agree. Anything from hoppers to Tricos and MIdges will get em so bring the full arsenal. Small mays in the morning, hopper/droppers during the heat of the day and micro midges into the evening will have the dry fly purist’s arm feelin’ a bit stiff. The canyon is fishing great as well so hang up the waders and load up the backpack for some phenomenal fishing further up!
Arkansas River
The Ark is so close to being awesome you can almost feel it. Still a little turbid in the tailwater stretch and will continue this way as long as we get the flood-stage rains on the Front Range. The beauty is the canyon isn’t far up the road and is at 700cfs and fishing well. Not much change here but hopefully next week we’ll be singing another tune…
Creeks
Talk about the place to be! Rains are keeping water in our creeks and keeping em cold as well. Bug activity is great and the high gradient streams are fishing well with small hoppers (so our little friends can take em) and bright droppers. Boulder Creek is doing really well and so is Clear Creek. There’s tons of other tiny tailwaters so pull up Colorado’s Fishing Atlas, close your eyes and point! It will produce. Sallies are on the menu, stimulators, CDC caddis and indicator mayflies with droppers below will have you grippin’ and grinnin’.
Stillwater
Though the big local stillwaters are fishing well, the place to be is the lakes, ponds and reservoirs at elevation. There are so many places to go within 1-2 hours of Denver that you could drive yourself crazy trying to hit a quarter of them in one season. Be brave, grab a buddy and scout some water that involves a hike. Callibaetis and Grey Drakes are coming off right now, caddis and smaller mays and craneflies too. If you find the right place you might even be able to pop a few on damselflies.
