While the upper reaches of our favorite freestone have hardened up there are still plenty of places to get a free drift. Look to nymph the warmest part of the day in some of the deepest water you can find. Midges and your favorite small nymph behind larger softhackles, caddis larva and stone flies is about all the thought you will have to put into your fly selection. Change depth and speed before you change flies.
As of this week most of our private water looks like a skating rink but the upper most beat is still open and is a great place to wet a line during our coldest months.
Saturday, 1/24 – Charlie Craven Fly Tying Demo! |
Craven got started in the business as a commercial tyer when he was twelve years old. He guided on the South Platte and other area waters for about twelve years or so, then moved on to help open and run a fly shop in Boulder and eventually opened Charlie’s Fly Box.
Charlie has since written two books and developed a reputation for tying amazing flies and being a great teacher as well.
Mark your calendars. More details to come!

Front Range Fishing Reports |
Deckers
123 CFS in December? Thanks Denver! Fishing is good, weather is good (enough). Get out while ya can! Stick to beads, yarn eggs and midges for your best opportunity to get a few looks. Focus on the slower water – your eddies, tailouts and pools for best results. Arkansas below Pueblo
This is the hot water right now. Consistent BWO activity, hungry hungry fishies, and easy water to dissect with flies. Get there early for your best shot at a good location and fish deep for the bigger fish. Bring a few dries for the afternoon risers. If you’d rather stay local on these cold days but still have an itchin’ to go fishin’, try your luck out on the South Platte in Denver. Anywhere along the river will produce as long as there is deep holding water. Stop by the shop for “secret” patterns.
