This past weekend I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with some awesome clients out at the beautiful Long Meadow Ranch. This property is hot right now and the big fish are taking meat!!
In my opinion there is nothing better in the world of fly fishing than landing fish on flies that you sat down and tied yourself. It is a very rewarding experience and I can remember the exact place and time that I caught my first fish on a fly that I whipped up. If you are a fly fisherman and you have never tied before I urge you to give it a try. Getting creative and fooling fish with some feathers and fur that you fashioned into a bug or a minnow just cannot be beat!!
Long Meadow Ranch
A couple nights before heading out to guide at Long Meadow Ranch I sat down at my fly tying vice and decided to tie up some streamers as an option for my clients to throw. I tied up some some size 10 pine squirrel leaches (left) to trail behind a cone head slumpbuster (right) . Both patterns are simple and fairly easy to tie. After a slower morning, we got some cloud cover in the afternoon and the streamer fishing was on!! These two patterns turned out to be just what the doctor ordered, and we threw them for the remainder of the day at some big meat eaters!
