SALMONFLIES on the Colorado River NOW!!!!
|
It’s on like Donkey Kong… Salmonfly time on the Colorado River!
Hurry hurry! Read all about it! Salmonflies on the Colorado! Fish are keying subsurface on the buffet of large stonefly nymphs washing down the river. Adults are present flying and mating on shore. Peak activity for these bugs has been late morning to early afternoon. Productive nymphs have been large #4-6 Pats rubber legs in dark colors, coffe, brown, blk yellow legs, pickle; bitch creeks #6 orange/black; large princes #8-12; and also large golden stone imitations. Just a few days ago we noticed certain pods of fish flushing adults on the surface. It is a truly cool thing to see and HEAR. The trout eat Salmonflies with such commitment. We call it flushing because it sounds like a toilet flushing.
That being said, today’s the day to book your float trip on the Upper Colorado. The bugs are thick but so are the wade fishermen so get your butt in a boat with Minturn Anglers! We love sharing this magical time of year so much that we are offering $50 off of Full Day Float Trips. That’s a 10% Discount. Call the shop or Book Online!

Eagle River
There’s nothing wrong with some dirty water. Bigger flies, heavier rigs, drinkin’ beers and fishin’ from the bank. It’s a great challenge for all of us and the fish haven’t gone anywhere. Hit em in the face… they’ll eat it! Big flies (get “jiggy”)
Creeks
Start thinking about putting your time in on these little gems. These will keep you pretty occupied as the Eagle rises and falls from stained to high and clear to low. Brush Creek in Eagle has been fire lately and the Upper Eagle and Homestake and great water during these higher flows (check ahead of time to see if the roads are open!).
Colorado River
Please see above! The stonefly hatch is in full effect and the fishies need to be caught by you! Think subsurface – Pat’s Rubber Legs, 20 Inchers, Stone Bombs and fish em right along the edges. The best way to fish the Colorado right now is from the boat so book your float with us for your best chances of gettin’ tight on some brown gold.

Be a hero this Summer!
Hands down a guide favorite, Minturn Anglers’ Kids Camps are an awesome way to get the little tykes involved in the timeless sport of fly fishing. Take a day to poke around Vail while knowing that your child is having the time of their life on our local small creeks. The young ones will spend a half day fishing, playing fishing themed games, flipping over rocks, collecting bugs and hiking. The Kids Camp continues to grow in popularity and has been offered for over 3 years now. Return customers are not uncommon, sometimes 3 to 4 days in a row! The coolest part? It only costs $135 and for an extra $60 we throw in a complete fly fishing combo kit – rod, reel, backing and line! Book now for the highlight of your child’s Summer.

Deckers
…and it’s only gotten higher. We’ll rarely tell people not to fish, but if you are going down to Deckers. Please be safe! Fish are still in the shallows and are eating big stoneflies, worms and caddis for the most part. Hooking fish has been the easy part. Landing them? Not so much. Fish heavier fluorocarbon – 3x and 4x – and horse em a little bit so they don’t get too tuckered or leave with new face ornaments.
Dream Stream
Sucker City! The Dream Stream has reverted to it’s off-season ways with smaller fish eating dark colored worms and bigger fish caught after weeding through the suckers. Those bad boys had their eye on baetis patterns. You aren’t going to run into many fishermen so it’s nice to get away from the crowds, but for better opportunities of bigger fish… wait a few months!
Arkansas River
Stoneflies here too, just a little dirty. Like the report last week, don’t be put off. Fish the edges with big flies but hang a little morsel off the back for the picky fish. If you’ll drive a few hours to fish the Arkansas River, you might as well head west my friend and fish the Colorado River with us!
