San Juan River Feb. 2013
San Juan River
Navajo Dam, NM
Flow: 350
Weather: Overcast and Breezy
Shop outing to New Mexico last weekend for some San Juan River fly fishing, what a great time. This fishery boasts 15,000 fish per mile, which translates into if it looks fishy fish it. Water was flowing at 350cfs with 1.5′ to 2′ of visibility. You didn’t have to make long casts to produce fish, you could make drifts off the end of your rod tip and have tight lines all day. These fish don’t spook easily and feel right at home down river of your feet eating whatever you kick up. (san juan shuffle)
Average size fish on the Juan 16-18″ rainbows and browns with plenty of shots at larger fish.
Patterns that we used were trout beads, San Juan worms as attractors with WD40’s, Big Mac’s, RS2, JuJu Baetis, Top Secret midge, in Black, Grey, and Chocolate. If your not fishing something red your dead. Clear larva lace, red thread body, anything wrapped thin and red will work. Join us next year for another round of San Juan River fly fishing with Minturn Anglers!
