Vail Valley Fishing Reports |

Tons of open water on this Rocky Mountain gem this winter and the fish are letting us know it. Plan on covering water and using lighter tippet (except on your small streamers). Your typical winter patterns are doing the trick but don’t hesitate to throw something different, maybe your own pattern! Fish are curious beasts and don’t have hands so they try things out with their mouth. Introduce the curious fish to some steel!

Deckers
If you are reading this, you should be at Deckers. Flows and fishing have both been up, up up! Great weather means more people so plan on getting there early. Don’t worry it’s going to be warm! Black RS-2’s, Barr’s BWO Emerger and egg patterns (still!) are your go to’s. Arkansas below Pueblo
The Ark is as reliable and consistent as it ever has been but it might be a place to avoid this weekend. The “Banana Belt” will host a plethora of people with the air temps the way they are and the consistent bug activity. If your close and itchin’ to fish, try going a little lower to some of the slower water and put a midge or BWO dry fly on a 12′ leader. You won’t regret it. Urban South Platte If you’d rather stay local on these cold days but still have to cast a line’, try your luck out on the South Platte in Denver. Anywhere along Santa Fe will produce as long as there is deep holding water. Carp are the target these days but throw a small trout fly below it, you’d be surprised what you have on the other end of the line!
